Board of Directors

Dick Best - Secretary

Dick Best is a transplant from the "other" coast (Massachusetts) who has now spent over half his life in California, including the last two in Tehachapi.  A man of many talents, interests, and shortcomings, he has experienced being bullied personally and has seen his children (now grown) bullied.  He feels a responsibility to do what he can to affect its dimunition, realizing that bullying will never be fully eradicated.

Evalene S. Campbell-Best - Vice President

Hello……..My name is Evie Campbell-Best. My husband, Dick Best, and I moved to Tehachapi just a little over 2 years ago. I had been trying for a number of years to relocate to Tehachapi as my heart longed to be in this beautiful, quaint and peaceful community. Within a month of moving here I took the position of Welcome Hostess for Tehachapi, meeting and welcoming our new residents and writing a column about them in The Loop Newspaper. I have bragged to each of our newcomers about the fantastic little town of which they had just become a part, and that we are just one big happy family here. Dick and I have felt so grateful to be able to live in this wonderful place and thank God every day for letting us be here.

In September of this year, my world was really rocked. My beautiful little town had experienced a tragedy that should never have happened. My heart was absolutely broken when I heard about Seth and the suffering he had experienced that brought him to the end of his life. Oh, how I hurt for him, his mother and the rest of his family. Then I began to hear many stories of other children who had also experienced bullying. This was just not acceptable to me and really touched home for me. My now 45 year old son had tried to end his life with some pills at age 14. He too, had been tormented by some of the same pain as Seth went through. I, however, was fortunate enough to find him in time to get him to the hospital and have his stomach pumped. It took many years and lots of love for my son to rise above his pain, but I can gratefully say he is doing very well now and has been able to give much back to his family and all those with whom he comes into contact.

It has now become my goal to do as much as possible to work within our community to bring about an end to bullying and make our town a safe and peaceful place for all our children in which to grow up. Bullying is something that should not be tolerated at any level. Everyone, young and old, is special in his or her own

Kathleen Ryan - Treasurer

My name is Kathleen Ryan. My daughter Fiona and I have been residents of Tehachapi for 6 years now and we love our home town! I have been a Financial Advisor for 17 years and love serving others. I have been a member and served as an Ambassador for the Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce. I am currently the Treasurer for the Tehachapi Chapter of the California State Old Time Fiddlers Association. My daughter is an 8th grader at Jacobson School.

I am dedicating my time and talents to the Tehachapi Anti-Bullying Coalition because if I don't try to make a difference who will? It is time to make Tehachapi a "safe place" for our kids to grow into who they may be as adults, with good self-esteem and self image, whatever their choices may be.

Yvette Stave - Dir. of Fund Development

Hi, my name is Yvette Stave and I moved here to Tehachapi from Orange County in 2007.  I wanted my son to learn the true meaning of small town community living through experiencing small town parades, community functions, and making life time friends..  I like the idea of my son growing up in a community instead of a city.  I want him to have a better chance at an education thru a community that supports each other, rather then a city where the children seem to get lost.

I am proud to have been a part of several different charity events here in town.  In 2010, I organized a fundraiser for a friend with a very sick child to help pay medical expenses, then participated in the Tehachapi “Relay for Life” event for the American Cancer Society by not only walking for a cure, but in helping to raise money and awareness.  When tragedy hit our community by the way of fire,  and I helped with the “West Fire Benefit Concert“.  Most recently, I helped with a candle light vigil in honor of the kids who have been taking their own lives because of being bullied.

I like being a part of community events.  I like helping others when I can and I like being able to make a difference in not only my son’s life, but in the lives of those around us. To me, this is being part of a community.  Helping each other when we can. I am a part of Tehachapi ABC not only because I have a child in the public school system who has been bullied, but because no child anywhere should ever have to go through it.  I believe Tehachapi ABC will not only help to bring this already close community even closer, but it will show that when people come together for a great cause, change can be made.

Don’t be afraid to stand up for someone, even if your standing alone.  It is the right thing to do.

Steven C Vogel - President

Steven Vogel President TehachapiABC

My name is Steven Vogel, and I am honored to serve as the very first president of the Tehachapi Anti-Bullying Coalition! I have lived in Tehachapi since age 13, and have continuously been committed to making a positive difference for my generation and the next through collaborative partnerships, public relations, and community outreach. I feel that I accurately understand the needs of our schools and community.

I have attended Kaplan College, graduating with credentials in Medical Assisting, attended Bakersfield College studying Journalism, and am currently attending the University of Phoenix working toward the attainment of a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Business with a concentration in Public Administration and Management.

I have 2 brothers and 1 sister, aged 22, 19, and 15. One of my brothers attends Whitworth University in Washington State studying Music Education; one attends Bakersfield College studying Music; my sister currently attends Monroe High School as a direct result of being bullied during her middle school years.

As a community member, I am involved with a number of organizations that focus on the positive development of the next generation of young people, including the Arts, Science, & Technology Committee of Tehachapi, and Have a Heart Humane Society. It is imperative that we as a community develop partnerships in an attempt to prevent the ostracization of our young people from their peers. I have learned that each person, young and old alike, has a story to tell and that we cannot judge a person simply because of our initial perceptions!

I have decided to get involved with Tehachapi Anti-Bullying Coalition, specifically, because I am committed to making a difference and creating an atmosphere free from violence for our young people. I am dedicated to making a difference in our community and strongly encourage you to get involved!
